Hillsborough
is situated 3 miles north of the city centre, but visitors
are advised to avoid this route and approach the ground
from the north instead. Parking is possible in the area
just north of Hillsborough.
BY
CAR:
From North: Exit M1 at junction 36 (s/p Barnsley (South)
A61). At roundabout turn right (s/p Sheffield A61) onto
the A61 dual carriageway. At roundabout after 0.9 miles,
go straight on (s/p Sheffield North A61). (*)From here,
signs to `Sheffield North' and `City Centre A61' lead directly
to the ground, a distance of 5.6 miles. The route passes
the Norfolk Arms after 3.4 miles, the Red Lion after 3.6
miles and the White Horse after 5.1 miles. The road leads
to a roundabout (the Leppings Lane Roundabout) at the bottom
of hill, by an Esso station. It forms the junction of the
A61, Penistone Road and Leppings Lane.
From
South: Exit M1 at junction 35A (s/p Manchester A616), and
at roundabout follow signs to Manchester A616 onto the A616.
At roundabout (by McDonalds) after 1.2 miles, take 1st exit
(s/p Sheffield North A61) onto the A61. Then as From North(*).
There's
a large car park at the Owlerton greyhound stadium, a 8-10
minute walk from the ground. To get there: from the Leppings
Lane Roundabout by the ground, go straight on (s/p City
Centre A61, Owlerton, Hillsborough), and the stadium is
on the LHS after 0.6 miles (s/p Barnsley A61, Manchester
A628). Alternatively, loop all the way round the Leppings
Lane Roundabout and head back up the A61. Turn left almost
immediately (s/p Clay Wheels) into Beeley Wood Road, which
leads into Clay Wheels Lane. Cars park along here, and there's
a secure car park at the site of an old brewery, on the
RHS after 0.4 miles. For bigger games, the police contact
local schools and other institutions to ask them to open
their car parks for matchday parking, eg. the Chaucer School,
on the A61 just before `The White Horse'.
