The death has been announced of Joe Baker, "the Scot
who played for England".
Born
in Liverpool but brought up in Scotland, he was the first
player ever to play for England whilst not playing for an
English club. He later moved from Hibernian to Torino when
the Edinburgh club refused to pay him an extra fiver a week.
City
fans will remember him most (only ones as old as you, Bob!
- Ed) for his contribution to their game with F!"£$t
in March 1968. The City Ground fixture had been abandoned
the previous December just a minute after Frank Large put
Leicester one-up as the snow fell.
In
the rearranged match one of his goals and another from City's
Alan Tewley were cancelling each other out when late in the
game he and Graham Cross challenged for a ball in the box.
City fans will forever be convinced that the wily Anglo-Italian-Scot
made an illegal call which encouraged The Tank to duck under
the ball and Peter Shilton was beaten by his flick header.
City lost the game 2-1.
Joe
died yesterday after collapsing on a Lanarkshire golf course
with a suspected heart-attack. He was 62.
If we can forgive David Speedie, we can forgive Joe Baker.
RIP,
Joe.
