Keith
Weller, one of City's all time greats, is still battling against
cancer. He has sadly not responded to conventional treatment.
Birchy has decided to launch an appeal to try and raise some
money to help Keith pay for alternative treatment.
Birch,
spreaking to the Mercury said:
"I
remember Keith was only two weeks away from coming over for
the last game at Filbert Street and I got a call from his
wife to say he would not be able to make it.
"The
news that he had been diagnosed with cancer shook everybody
to the roots. Myself and my helper on these occasions Derek
Norton, also a close friend of Keith's, were shattered by
it.
"We
have been keeping in touch since then and unfortunately there
seems nothing more they can do for him with the usual treatments
so he is giving it, as he says himself, the last throw of
the dice by going to an alternative medicine centre in Mexico.
"He
does not mind everyone here knowing that and I know it is
a bit corny but I said to him, you know Foxes never quit so
hang on in there.
"Because
of his illness he has not been working for more than a year,
the treatments are expensive and it was another of our Bloomfield
boys, Steve Earle, living in Tulsa, who told me how much it
was costing and I just thought we can't let Keith have all
the financial burden.
"So
we have set up this fund and every penny will go to Keith's
family to help them. I am sure all City fans will want to
help me in this.
"I
think it is fair to say Keith was one of the best-ever players
to pull on a City shirt and it is now our chance to support
him in this difficult time.
"I
know all City fans will wish him all the best and, while we
can't do anything for him medically, by backing this event
we can at least support him in another way."

club are setting up the LCFC Keith Weller Appeal fund and
