About FFS

JJk 0 City 1 (22/07/02) by Timo Nieminen

James Scowcroft scored the only goal of the game as Leicester City defeated JJK Jyväskylä in their second and final game of the pre-season tour.

Once more City dominated the game from start to beginning, but failed to turn their superiority into goals.

City manager Micky Adams was not an entirely happy man after the game.

"I am pleased to say this is our last game here in Finland. We are very short of players, and we would not have eleven fit players for one more game in Finland." said Adams.

With Dennis Wise somewhere else and five players (Flowers, Ashton, Piper, Stevenson and Davidson) out injured the team was down to bare bones. Adams even had to ask local goalkeeper Matti Koskela to fill in as a cover for Ian Walker.

And when Gerry Taggart was slightly injured on 74 minutes, Junior Lewis had to put the playing kit back on. Lewis was originally substituted at half-time. To make matters worse Scowcroft, Elliott and Deane were also injured on Sunday. None of them seriously, though.

"We enjoyed the game anyway. The players looked tired, but I expect them to be tired. After all these very physical training sessions I would be disappointed if they weren´t" Adams said.

City played a good first half with Gerry Taggart and Matt Elliott very strong at the back and three strikers (Dickov, Scowcroft and Deane) looking sharp enough against their Finnish opponents.

Yet City had to wait until 28. minutes for the opening goal. James Scowcroft powerfully headed home an Alan Rogers cross. The move started with a brilliant cross-field pass by Matt Elliott.

Paul Dickov had a couple of chances, but every time he somehow managed to shoot just wide.

Second half was a pretty dull affair. The biggest cheer was received by 15-year old Finnish wonder-boy Tomi Petrescu who replaced Scowcroft on 65 minutes and almost scored after playing a neat one-two with Stefan Oakes in injury time.

"Tomi is a very pleasant young man. He has a little bit to do before he breaks into the first team, but his ability is awesome" said Adams.

The key man for City was Dickov, who played more as an attacking midfielder than as a striker. Dickov is very much in-form at the moment and will score a lot of goals next season, if he gets better service from the midfielders than he got in these two games in Finland.

At the moment Adams clearly has problems in midfield. We didn´t see much of Junior Lewis, Martin Reeves seemed to be very tired and Jordan Stewart is not a playmaker.

Most of the scoring chances were created by Paul Dickov, who was full of running and hungry for goals. Oh, how much this team misses Muzzy Izzet.

City (4-3-3): Ian Walker - Frank Sinclair, Gerry Taggart (74. Lewis, came back on because there were no more substitutes), Matt Elliott (46. Ashley Lyth), Alan Rogers - Junior Lewis (46. Stefan Oakes), Martin Reeves, Jordan Stewart - Paul Dickov, Brian Deane (57. Trevor Benjamin), James Scowcroft (65. Tomi Petrescu).
