Do you remember any fairytales in football lately? If not,
listen to this.
Striker
Tomi Petrescu, who turns 16 next Tuesday, will be in the Leicester
City squad to face JJK Jyväskylä on Sunday.
On
Friday the wonder-boy of Finnish football trained with City´s
first team and won applause from the senior players with his
silky skills. City manager Micky Adams did not hesitate to
promote Petrescu, who last season played for Leicester City
Youth Academy U-17 team, to the first team after Dennis Wise
left the pre-season camp.
Tomi
is in squad on merit, not just because we were suddenly one
man short or because we play in his home-town on Sunday. He
was supposed to train with the first team squad anyway during
this trip, so in that sense there is nothing extraordinary.
Tomi
is a very, very talented player and he keeps on working hard
he can achieve anything, Adams said,
"Tomi
Petrescu knows his teammates, because he spent most of last
season training at Belvoir Drive with the Academy squads.
And a couple of times he has trained with the first team players."
Petrescu duly admits that he only expects to play five minutes
or so as a substitute on Sunday. And with Dickov, Deane, Scowcroft,
Stevenson, Benjamin and Piper all ready to bang in the goals
in the Nationwide and Tommy Wright and others waiting for
their chance Petrescu will happily settle for a place in the
U17 team next season.
"I
know I am not much of a player yet compared with strikers
like Dickov and Scowcroft, but I can learn so much just by
training with them. I am delighted and excited to be given
this opportunity." Petrescu said.
Leicester
City have hopes of Petrescu. A year ago Academy director Alan
Hill personally travelled to Finland to meet Tomi and his
parents after the Finnish Youth International impressed when
he visited Belvoir Drive thanks to the link-up between JJK
and Leicester City.
"Before
Tomi signed for Leicester we were also contacted by five or
six other European clubs, including Napoli and FC Metz. And
Tomi was only 14 at that time. He is a natural goalscorer"
said the JJK chairman Janne Särkkä.
Tomi
signed a five-year deal with Leicester City last summer. He
attends a school in Leicester and admits he enjoys every minute
of his life in the Midlands.
"The
city of Leicester is similar to Jyväskylä in many ways, so
I have settled in quite easily. And I think so highly of the
Academy coaches that I can´t wait to get back to Belvoir Drive
and go on working with them" smiles Petrescu.
He
was supposed to be on his way back to Leicester with the first
team squad on Tuesday. But the Finnish U-17 international
team has some kind of training camp next week, so the hard
work at Belvoir Drive has to wait a couple of more days for
Tomi.
