As
predicted (cos no-one else wants us), Walkers have secured
the naming rights to the new City stadium.
The
brand new stadium, which will be completed by June 30th will
be known, for at least the next 10 years, as The Walkers Bowl.
City
will be paid £1.5 million for Walkers to have it's name
slapped up on the stadium.
A
spokesperson for Walkers said:
“As
a company we have been based in the Leicester area for over
50 years and it was on August 15 1987 that Leicester City
first wore shirts bearing the Walkers brand for their Division
Two game against Shrewsbury Town. So now we see the stadium
as being a home for Walkers and its employees for the long
term.
“We
believe this clearly demonstrates our strong ties to the city
and to the community and shows that we genuinely care about
the club.”
Walkers
Chief Executive Martin Glenn said: “We hope that this gives
our employees as well as the local community in general a
real sense of pride and represents a real long term commitment
to the club by Walkers.”
Former
City star, Gary Lineker, who stars in all the Walkers advertys
said:
“Walkers
and Leicester have a great historical partnership based on
the beginning of the business in 1948 and this new agreement
almost makes them inseparable.
“There
is no doubt that Walkers has established itself as a valuable
part of the community in Leicester. I am very proud to have
strong links to both Walkers and Leicester City.”
The
jokes have already started, calling it the crisp bowl and
toilet bowl.
City
fans are split on the name. Some say it's too boring, some
too American. Others wanted the Fosse name in there.
