Fascinating
viewing on ITV tonight as "Tonight with Trevor McDonald"
studied Dave Bassett and Sam Allardyce for stress.
Filmed
at the Bolton - Leicester game, the two managers were wired
up so their heart rate and blood pressure could be monitored
throughout the game, much to the excitement of the doctor
involved.
Sam
Allardyce had a normal heart rate of 46, but this leaped up
to a whopping 162 when he got really excited! (Not when players
were getting sent off, but towards the end when they were
piling on the pressure to equalise) His blood presuure went
up from 130 to 190 and the doctor described it as if he'd
been working out so hard he'd driven himself to exhaustion
and it was potentially dangerous.
Bassett
on the other hand had a normal heart rate of 55 and it peaked
at 120. His blood pressure went up from 110 to 190. But there
was something far more worrying about Bassett's readings.
As he got more stressed his heart rate became irregular.
At
the time of Muzzy's sending off he even had a "couplet",
a double irregular beat. If a couplet occurs at the wrong
time out of synch, it can cause a heart spasm and real problems.
Bassett
didn't seem too unduly worried as he didn't need heart surgery
or anything, but did say it's only a game, no matter how much
we love it, and it's not worth putting his life on the line
for.
