Wise and Savage deny bust up (15/12/01)

City called a press conference yesterday to deny that Sav and Wisey had come to blows at the Christmas club bash.

The Mirror had reported that...

Dennis Wise and Robbie Savage were involved in an amazing bust-up at the players' Christmas party.

They allegedly squared up after Wise gave Savage a teddy bear impaled on a sex toy and is said to have told him: "Take this, because you're the only p***k in a Leicester shirt at the moment."

It was a jibe at Savage's below-par form in Leicester's troubled season, which has left them one place off the bottom of the Premiership.

The Wales winger responded by smearing chocolate on Wise's nose, but the pair had to be separated by team-mates when Savage became furious over a sexual remark about his girlfriend.

At the press conference Bassett said,

"We've obviously got to respond to the article as it's basically a mountain out of a molehill.

"The players went out to a fancy dress party and when I arrived later on the owner was very complimentary about how they had behaved.

"There was no drunkenness or aggravation at all. I spoke to both Dennis and Robbie on the night and there was no problem.

"The players all buy each other presents, some of which are to take the mickey and some are a little pornographic. It's been like that for a long time and it's all good-hearted mickey-taking.

"But there was no bust-up and no-one got carried away. We want to kill this off now as it's just another sensational story that seems to crop up. In this politically correct time it seems that you're not allowed to go out and have a good time."

Wise said: "Myself and Sav were highlighted simply because we're easy targets. It is very wrong and very sad.

"We had a little joke and obviously someone has taken it a little bit further in the newspaper story."

Savage added:

"I've got the utmost respect for Dennis as a player and a person and there was no incident. There is no rift in the camp whatsoever.

"I'm very disappointed with the article because there is not an ounce of truth in it."
