Next
week’s away game at Villa could be under threat after the
PFA called strike action for the weekend of December 1.
Talks
between the players’ union, the FA, the Premier League and
Football League broke down last night with the PFA immediately
issuing strike notices.
That
would mean the clash on December 1 faces postponement as all
league games with cameras present - live or recorded - would
be affected.
Villa's
Chairman, who is completely against a strike has already said
he intends to take the Union to court as the strike is illegal.
(Doug Ellis not recognising union rights? Surely not...) It
will be interesting to see what his players do!
It
will also be interesting to see what City's stance is, which
players will strike, will they be fined , can non-union players
play instead.
The
PFA want 5% stake of the £1.5billion television deal the Premier
League recently negotiated with Sky and ITV, which is the
same percentage they have always been offered in the past
despite no formal agreement. They have been offered only 2.5%
this time, late in the day.
99% of the PFA's members have voted to strike but it is hoped
a deal can be agreed before then. Taylor has said that they
are willing to meet half way.
Taylor
said: "It's 17 months since they did their new agreement and
they did not meet with us until September and they offered
us even less than what we had before, so you can imagine why
we felt they had a hidden agenda here.
"What
we've been offered is not a fair reflection of the jobs that
we do in the game and I can assure you that our accounts are
transparent.
"It's
all league games starting on December 1 and from that point
of view I understand the concerns of the broadcasting companies.
"It
is where there are cameras for live transmission or recorded
highlights."
The
money the PFA get is used not only to help struggling clubs,
but also players whose careers are terminated early etc. All
union members pay a flat fee of £75 per year. The union
is democratic and each member is equal. The Premiership members
waive their tv rights money though so that it can all go to
the PFA, so in effect the Beckhams and Owen's of the world
are paying absolutely thousands to the Union as well as their
£75.
