After
FFS voiced it's concerns over the possible appointment of
Portsmouth's current Director of Football, Harry Redknapp,
for the vacant managerial position at City, it now appears
that Redknapp has withdrawn his application.
The
circumstances behind his withdrawal is a bit of a mystery
with him stating in his Racing Post Column this morning that
it was basically upto him to say either Yes or No. It appears
that this had all changed by this afternoon though with Leicester
issuing a statement that read:
"Harry
Redknapp has asked to be no longer considered for the position
of manager at the club. This follows discussions he had with
his chairman at Portsmouth.
"Harry
was one of several people whom the board have invited for
interview. A preliminary meeting was held earlier this week
as part of this process.
"The
board wishes to make it clear that no formal offer to manage
the club had been made to Harry or, for that matter, anyone
else at this stage.
"The
board has more interviews arranged in the next few days and
will continue to work towards appointing a new manager as
speedily as is practically possible.
"This
is a tremendously important appointment for the future of
the club and we are all determined to appoint the right person."
Redknapp
himself also issued a statement saying, "It has been
a very hard decision for me to make, but I have decided to
turn down the offer of the Leicester manager's job.
"I
feel I owe some loyalty to Portsmouth and to their chairman
Milan Mandaric. Milan has become a close friend of mine and
he brought me to Portsmouth to do a job and help them achieve
a goal. He did not want me to leave, but he although he said
he would not stand in my way if I chose to go to Leicester.
"I
have been at Portsmouth for only four months and I feel I
owe them a special loyalty. I have had only two clubs in 20
years and I preach loyalty to players, so I felt it was important
for me to remain loyal to Milan. Therefore I have decided
to stay where I am, and I wish Leicester City all the best
for the future."
After
Harry had talks with City Chairman John Elsom on Thursday
it was almost taken as read that Redknapp would be the new
City boss despite Ex- Arsenal, Leeds and Spurs manager George
Graham being the fans choice by a long way.
Whatever
the sticking point was for Harry it certainly shouldn't have
been money. While Redknapp was famous for running West Ham
on a shoe String budget, John Elsom had assured him that there
would be money to spend at City without selling any of City's
players.
"Obviously,
we want the new manager to have the strongest possible squad
to work with and so it is very important that our best players
stay at the club." Said Elsom.
"It is only fair to the new man to give him the best
possible chance of pulling us up the table and any decisions
in that respect will be his when he has had time to judge
the capabilities of the squad."
