You
can always rely on some bugger, when things are getting tough
and we should be rallying the troops, to come out with a pile
of crap which can cause trouble.
FFS
were asked to go on Radio 5 live's footy phone in last night
to talk about the City situation. During that slot, DJ Adrian
suddenly says, here's what former Chairman and Chief Exec
Tom Smeaton has to say.
(Yes,
the man who publicly clashed with Martin O'Neill at the start
of 1998 in a row over the level of spending on new players,
and has been trying to get his hands back on the club ever
since.)
Up
pops Smeaton, wait for it, demanding to know where the money
has gone! The upshot was he was questioning the fact that
the club will not have too much dosh to give to a new manager
for players. Financial wizard Mr Smeaton has worked out that
by his reckoning there should be £15m swilling around.
His
insinuations that there is any financial wrong doing at the
club at this time is pretty bloody awful.
His
call for a special meeting should be welcomed by fans, so
we can go down to it and give him a piece of our mind!
FFS
were pretty bleeding cross at his comments but managed not
to to swear live on the Beeb and dismissed his comments as
"complete twaddle" and rattled off a few figures
about the new stadium costs etc.
The
club today released the following statement on the matter:
"Tom's
understanding of the financial position of the company is
incorrect.
"Our
audited accounts for the year ending July 31 2001 will be
published within the next two weeks and these have been audited
by PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the leading financial organisations
in the world.
"It
is disappointing Tom should choose to make his comments at
a time when this club needs unity and a collective strength."
June
last year saw Smeaton raise his head when he revealed that
he was connected with a takeover bid, supported by a number
of Leicestersire business people. He claimed that there were
plans, should the bid succeed, to build a 35,000 capacity
stadium with a retractable roof which would be adaptable on
a 7 day a week basis as a major entertainment venue. John
Elsom described this bid as disruptive and questioned whether
or not the 'gang of four' were involved.
Smeaton
was back again this summer too. Another consortium of him
and some different mates, Roy Parker and John Sharp, were
trying to put in another bid in for LCFC. He didn't get anywhere
then either.
Should
Smeaton keep his mouth shut? Or is entitled to his say as
a shareholder?
