City
'keeper Ian Walker has been speaking to The Times newspaper
explaining why he joined Leicester and just how he felt at
Spurs. Asked about his final few months at Spurs Walker said,
Its only now I realise how depressed and frustrated
I was at Tottenham.
I
must have been a pain in the backside because I was walking
around with the hump all day long. But thats all lifted
now.
He
went on to explain what kind of relationship he had with then
Spurs manager, George Graham, Id been there since
I was a trainee, but loyalty meant nothing.
They
bought Neil Sullivan from Wimbledon and I didnt have
a problem with that, but on the Friday before the start of
last season, George wouldnt say which one of us was
playing. Then I bought the Evening Standard on the way home
and there was a big headline saying Neil was in and I was
out.
I
let it ride over the weekend because I didnt want to
upset the team, but went to see George on the Monday. He tried
to deny hed said anything, but there were loads of quotes
and I knew the reporter whod written it. George just
didnt have the honesty to say it to my face.
It
was then that Walker decided that he wished to be transfer
listed. But it was a chance meeting with Stan Collymore, that
convinced him that Filbert Street could offer just what he
needed, first team football.
Stan
was driving around the States in a camper van this summer
when I bumped into him, Walker said. Despite his
problems here, he said it was a great club. Inside information
helps. Then I met Peter Taylor and he said it could kick-start
my career. Id worked really hard with Hans Segers (the
goalkeeping coach) at Spurs because he kept saying Id
get a chance somewhere. It wasnt a wrench to leave Tottenham.
So
there you have it lady's and gentlemen. The reason for Walker
being here, Stan Collymore. Maybe it's one of the few things
we can actually thankhim for?
