Ade
Akinbiyi scored his first goal since April to help ease some
of the pressure on his struggling boss Peter Taylor as City
just managed to edge past Blackpool in the Second Round of
the Worthington Cup.
Unfortunately
there was precious little to write home about in this nervously
fought encounter where it was obvious that the team came to
do only one thing, make sure they didn't get Peter Taylor
the sack. To that end they succeeded when Robbie Savage's
cross inside the far post was met by Ade Akinbiyi's head in
the 21st minute
Unfortunately
the price the fans paid for this show of security for Peter
Taylor was to have to endure 90 minutes of total and utter
shite.
City
had precious few opportunities against a hardworking Blackpool
side and were put under pressure for much of the second-half.
You could not only hear the groans of the crowd when an extra
5 minutes of time was added but also the players aswell.
New
'keeper Ian Walker, playing only his second full game for
City, had to be rescued early on by Callum Davidson when he
misread a simple catch and Davidson had to clear up for him.
Fortunately
Walker continued the game with much more skill and saved City's
blushes on many occasions with one of the most notable saves
when Richard Wellens skipped past three defenders, only to
see his hard effort finish up for nought when Brett Ormerod's
header was tipped wide.
When
Akinbiyi scored in the 21st minute though you would have expected
City to capitalise? Unfortunately this wasn't the case and
City ended up playing out the rest of the match in the most
nervous fashion you could have imagined.
So
as City hold on to their place in the Third Round Taylor's
job may be safe............ for now.
