Two
red cards, a missed penalty, some dodgy refereeing decisions
and a late equaliser. All in a days work for City. But the
question still remains, will it be enough to stop Peter Taylor
getting the sack?
The
afternoon looked like it would be same old story for City
as they went 1-0 down after only 12 minutes when Ipswich striker
Marcus Stewart punished City's slack defence to hit home a
blinding shot past new boy Ian Walker.
City's
first real concrete chance came after 27 minutes when City
were awarded a free-kick just eight yards out from goal after
Ipswich 'keeper Sereni made the mistake of scooping up John
McGreal's back-pass.
Callum Davidson was the man to step up and take the free kick
but his low shot went straight into the wall and was cleared
to safety.
As
half time came about the crowd were noticeably getting behind
the team even though they were 1-0 down and the Taylor out
chants that have been heard in recent weeks were also absent.
The
man that seemed to be singled out for abuse today was referee
Barry Knight who was definitely guilty of some very strange
decisions as he prevented the game from flowing.
The
second half started with Taylor swapping young Jordan Stewart
for Frank Sinclair. The decision proved to be a good one with
him making his mark immediately as City tried to put some
pressure on the visitors.
An
early shot by Davidson was sent over the bar by Ipswich 'keeper
Sereni after just 47 minutes. It proved to be his last major
contribution to the game as just ten minutes later he was
sent off after it appeared that he headbutted Savage in the
penalty area. This then forced Ipswich to remove Finidi George
who was replaced by substitute 'keeper Keith Branagan.
Unfortunately
the resulting penalty was sent way over the bar by the usually
cool Izzet to leave City still trailing.
City
also fell foul of a redcard when Marshall was sent off for
tussling with Reuser after he fouled Marshall.
City
finally got their equaliser in the 90th minute when a goalmouth
scramble ended with Dean Sturridge sliding the ball home.
This
then set up a frantic finish as both teams struggled to find
the elusive wining goal. Unfortunately for City though they
could not find the back of the net and the game ended 1-1.
All
in all it was not a great match and will definitely be remembered
more for the red cards and missed penalty than anything else.
The main question though is will it be enough to save Taylor?
I doubt it. City were very poor today and just went on to
prove that up front City have a lot of work to do. Akinbiyi
is running alot but is not getting anywhere fast.
At
the time of writing there has been no announcement but former
City striker Tony Cottee was asked by SkySports if he thought
that a draw was good enough to keep Taylor's job. He said
no.
