Mine
and Lynn's pre-match rituals take us to very different areas
of the City during match days.
While
Lynn is dispatched down to the ground early to take photos,
find out if anything interesting is happening and generally
do some work (and usually get some tickets for the next away
match), I'm forced to go down the pub with the lads.
Now
this isn't the pleasure that you may think it is seeing as
I'm one of those strange folk who doesn't drink alcohol meaning
that my time in the pub is spent drinking Diet Coke and talking
alot. This obviously means that I'm of perfectly clear head
(well as clear as my head gets) for the whole day meaning
that I seemed to notice the heavy handedness of the police
more than most on Saturday.
Now
maybe it was just me but I'm almost sure that I've never seen
so many police officers in town at the same time in my life.
They made regular visits to the Last Plantaginet (the preferred
cheap drinking venue of die hard City fans and the women in
there ain't too bad neither ;-0) which was all fair and well,
made me feel very safe.
There
was plenty of them traipsing the street. A couple even engaged
us in gentle banter. It was all very nice and pleasant until
they decided that they weren't doing enough to earn their
pay and proceeded to stop and search anyone who looked like
they may be going to the football.
It
probably had something to do with the recent NCIS Football
Criminal reports that said violence had moved away from stadiums
and into town centres that caused the increase of the police.
But am I the only one who thinks that they should be there
to make you feel safe and not to make you feel uncomfortable?
Now
I'm sure that stop and search is very useful in some situations.
Just not to stop and antagonism someone for the sake of it
such as what was happening on Saturday.
The
same continued as we were basically escorted from the Plantaginet
all the way to the Courthouse on New Walk. Fair enough you
might say, a group of lads could be out to cause trouble.
That is until you relise that there was 6 of us, looking about
as dangerous as a wet paper bag. We were even watched by 8
police officers while we drank.
Thankfully
they obviously realised that they weren't following the ring
leaders some kind of massively active football hooligan unit
and decided to leave us alone as we walked to the ground.
On
arrival at Filbert Street it looked like the mass police presence
was continued inside the ground along with ShoSec not very
secure-ity.
After
a dire game and from what I could tell, no trouble inside
the ground, the police moved outside where they had half of
the Leicstershire constabulary along with selected members
from Manchester's fine force obviously on an away day to watch
their team beat the shite out of us on the pitch.
Again
stop and search was used to laughable proportions as Leicesters
fine police force decided to release the hounds upon Muz's
Bar. The crime, as far as I could see? Too many people in
one place. The police don't like that.
I'd
had enough by then so decided to go straight home but I would
be interested to find out how many people were actually arrested.
Although I'm sure that the police will argue that the reason
there was no trouble is because of their presence.
Now
I'm not anti police. I don't want a return to the old days
when you were scared to walk down the street on match days.
But I was always taught that the police were there to make
you feel safe, not uncomfortable, which is what happened to
me this weekend.
I
also believe that Stop and Search powers are now being used
by the police to basically take the piss with many fans being
arrested for nothing more than being loud.
Needless
to say that I'll be very interested in what the police presence
is like at the next home match.
