If
Saturday's display of dissatisfaction by City's fans is anything
to go by then we could very soon see scenes down at Filbert
Street that were thought long gone after the recent successful
Premiership campaigns.
Anyone
who remembers the early days of Martin O'Neills reign at City
will be familiar with the words "Sheffield" and
"Wednesday", they'll probably also remember the
"Blue Tuesday" group who were so concerned about
City that they decided to take their own action.
In
fact at one stage things were so bad that a complete riot
was only narrowly averted when the board decided to speak
to some "representatives" from the concerned parties.
Nothing
that has happened since, not the Gang of four, the regular
approaches by other teams for Martin O'Neill, the Pierpoint
problems or even last season's incredible losing streak, has
ever came even slightly close to what happened back in the
dark days. That is until now.
Last
season when things were going from bad to worse if some fans
started booing the team or even worse, calling for the head
of the manager, then they were usually drowned out by the
rest of the crowd. Last weekend though that did not happen.
There
were more people booing than cheering and it took less than
40 minutes for the crowd to become disgruntled. The team was
booed off at half time and those that didn't leave to go back
down the pub (and believe me when I say that there were quite
a few who left at half time) continued booing throughout the
second half and at the end of the match. The only cheers at
the end were for the Bolton team.
City
now have a problem. Do they make a ritual sacrifice and give
the public what they want, the head of Peter Taylor? Or do
they stick it out, give him a chance to turn it round and
risk riots and probably more importantly to them, lost revenue?
Many
fans will say that Taylor should have walked after Saturday's
shambles. Many more will argue the case for giving him some
more time. Forfoxsake will always try and back the manager.
But it's becoming harder and harder to say anything positive.
