City manager Peter Taylor today confirmed on the eve of City's
seven day training trip to Spain, that Ipswich striker, and
long term City target, Jamie Scowcroft was again on the short
list of strikers that we would like to have for next season.
Things
took a rather odd turn though as Ipswich's chairman David
Sheepshanks had already said yesterday that Scowcroft was
not for sale and that the club had already turned down a bid
for him from City.
Then
Taylor admitted that he had made an enquiry, but that was
as far as it had gone, "I can confirm that we have made
an enquiry for the player but that's as far as it has gone.
"It's
no secret that we're looking for a top-quality striker.
"We
have got a few irons in the fire and our search is continuing."
Meanwhile
Ipswich Town Chairman, David Sheepshanks, told his official
website, "We are aware of Leicester City's very firm
interest in James Scowcroft but we are not keen to sell.
"James
has been in to discuss his future as he is aware of speculation.
He has indicated that he may be interested in pursuing other
options but he has not made a formal transfer request."
While
Scowcroft himself said, "The speculation kept cropping
up so I went in to see the manager to have a chat about what
was going on. He was very open with me and I know there was
interest in me from Leicester earlier in the summer.
"But
that has died down now and I just want to concentrate on preparing
for the new season with Ipswich Town. I have never said I
want to leave and have not made any transfer requests. I enjoy
being at Ipswich this will be a big season and I want
to play a part in it."
It
is thought that City have had o turn their attentions to Scowcroft
after Coventry's John Hartson decided that he would be staying
at the club for the foreseeable future. Taylor had said earlier
in the week that he had more irons in the fire but it was
only made public yesterday that Scowcroft was one of them.
