Although Peter Taylor was hoping that the game against Man
Utd at Old Trafford would be a springboard to greater things,
and help soothe the pain of last weeks defeat against Wycomb,
it seems that City underestimated the might of the Premier
Leagues champions.
Even
though Man Utd were without the services of Beckham, Giggs
and Barthez, who injured himself while warming up, City
were still under the kosh for almost the entire game but
it did look like City would be able to hold out and gain
a very memorable point until two late goals, one in injury
time, destroyed that idea.
Unfortunately
for City it was a stroke of luck that helped United on their
way after Solskjaer's shot was deflected and went in off
of Dwight Yorke. Royce had no chance with the shot after
it's wicked deflection and the game was almost immediately
over for City.
To
add more insult to injury a second goal was then scored
by Silvestre which flew at such pace City 'keeper Simon
Royce could only look on as it hit the back of the net.
City
did make the occasional break and to be fair the back line
did hold out for 88 minutes until the fluke goal took it's
toll on City's spirits.
Taylor
said afterwards, "I've spoken to the goalkeeper and
he said it was going straight at him and then it was deflected
off a Man United player so that's a little bit of bad luck,"
Taylor said.
"For
us the players were getting tired because they had worked
so hard, which you have to do here.
"For
the second goal I think the Frenchman has said he meant
to cross it for Dwight so that hurts as well.
"I'm
not very happy with the result today, the 2-0, but I'm very
happy with their performance because I felt they worked
as hard as they possibly could."
