Former City favorite Tony Cottee has been sacked as manager
of Third Division Barnet FC.
Cottee
had moved to Barnet after things did not work out for him
at Norwich City and he was hoping that the experience would
give him a foothold on the ladder to his dream job, managing
West Ham.
Unfortunately
after a string or bad results, Barnet have yet to win 10
games, Cottee has stepped down while former Barnet manager
John Still, who was moved upstairs and sideways promoted
to "Director of Football" when Cottee arrived,
will take over in an attempt to save Barnet from the drop.
Cottee
told fans and reporters, "This has been a fantastic
learning curve for me and my experience with Barnet will
stand me in good stead for the future.
"With the current precarious situation, the Chairman
and I agree that it is best that the team is placed in the
hands of a man with more experience in Third Division football."
There
was some speculation that Cottee may stay on at Underhill
as a player after he hit 10 goals in 18 games for Barnet
but that speculation was almost immediately killed off when
chairman Tony Kleanthous said: "Tony has brought a
sparkle to the club and we are sad to see him go. Everyone
at Barnet FC wishes him the best of luck for the future,
Tony will always be welcome at Underhill."
Cottee
now joins his former City and Norwich player Steve Walsh
who is also in the football wilderness after having his
contract terminated by Norwich.
The
two could link back up as they have both expressed a desire
to go into management although Steve Walsh would prefer
latter rather than sooner. Both applied for the managers
job at City when Martin O'Neill left in the summer before
it eventually went to Peter Taylor and soon after both left
for Norwich City.
