Taylor
asked to face his critics tonight on the Radio Leicester
'phone in, and now has his sights set firmly on European
qualification via the league.
Taylor
wasn't hiding from the tough questions after Saturday's
loss to Wycombe, and requested that he be allowed onto the
Monday night 'phone in to talk to angry fans and respond
to e-mails which the official website had asked to be "constructive".
Most
callers however were full of praise for the manager's performance
this season, although they wanted answers about Saturday.
Lack
of leadership
Taylor
agreed with one caller there had been a lack of leadership
on Saturday and mentioned how Stuart Pearce had played on
Sunday for West Ham. Taylor also said not only Matty Elliott
needed to think about leadership but also Taggart, Izzet
and Rowett and the likes too. He went on to say sometimes
it needs someone to grab a team mate by the throat, as he
can't always fo it from the sideline! He agreed that they
missed Neil Lennon for having a go at colleagues when necessary.
Substitutions
explanations
Taylor
explained his reasoning behind the double substitution,
which then meant Muzzy had to struggle on. He said he'd
decided that Sturridge and Akinbiyi were both having bad
games. Dean had said at half time he felt tired and it wasn't
happening, and Ade was not at his best. Taylor decided that
after the Muzzy equaliser he would bring on more fresh legs
and go to win the game. He knew Arnie could do that, and
Trevor Benjamin had been brilliant against Liverpool, and
he was confident they could win this one for us. But 30
seconds later Muzzy was injured and Arnie had to drop back
into midfiled and all the plans went out of the window.
Lack
of motivation
Again
and again in the interview the talk turned to how the players
did not look up for it. Taylor stressed again and again
they were. More than anything. And that seemed to be the
problem. He was under no doubt they wanted it badly, but
he could understand that it may looked otherwise. The pressure
on them was immense as everyone thought they would win easily,
and they were nervous and under pressure. They needed a
good start so they could relax and start to play, and it
didn't happen.
Time
for a big name striker?
One
caller asked if it was now time for another big name striker
in the £6-7 million bracket. Taylor said that he had
been talking to John Elsom and he knows what is needed for
the future. At the moment the squad is bigger and better
than ever and there is good competition for places, but
yes, he'd like a bit of class. A 29 year old Mancini. He
said that Ade is getting better all the time, apart from
Saturday, and although he may never be the best striker
in the world, he learns with every game, but yes, they do
need a quality striker.
Rotation
system and formations
Taylor
was asked if he thought a rotation system may help. The
caller suggested that if that was the case then the likes
of Stef Oakes would not be thrown into the deep end as we
desperately missed Junior Lewis on Saturday. Taylor said
that he had believed that Stef was more a sort of player
like Junior than Matt Jones was so went with Stef. Unfortunately
Stef was under pressure like the others and not his normal
confident self. Taylor said he believes that Matt Jones
is going to be a very good player, but he is still young
and needs more league games under his belt before he plays
in the really big games. He also mentioned that Matt Jones
looked like he may have a bit of right back in him, and
that his passes are very optimistic but with great vision
and they just need to calm him down so he plays more like
David Batty. Apparently Taylor has talked to David O'Leary
about this.
Taylor
also reiterated his master plan of being able to play 4-4-2
whilst not having the ball and switching to 5-3-2 when attacking.
He says he managed to do it with the U-21s but still needs
to work on it here.
Europe
and the rest of the season
Taylor
said that at the beginning of the season he would have been
happy with 10th. Following MON was a difficult job, but
he was pleased with the progress so far. He saw his job
here as long term, and was loving it here. He said it was
hard work when he didn't have Heskey, Collymore and Lennon
but he is determined to get it right. He said he was not
prepared to let the season go pear-shaped and that we were
going to qualify through the league for Europe. he's hoping
for a Liverpool - Arsenal FA Cup final as that will mean
another league place for the UEFA Cup.
And
where does Andrew Impey want to go on holiday?!
Taylor
has promised the players that if they string 4-5 wins together
in the next bunch of games he will take them all on holiday
wherever they want to go...but not where Andrew Impey wants.
So
just where does Andrew Impey want to go??! Send your answers
