On this day – 17th May

On this day in 1992 Leicester legend Gary Lineker had the chance to beat Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record, when England were awarded a penalty in a friendly match against Brazil. Lineker stepped up and chipped the ball gently down the middle – an easy save for the goalkeeper. Lineker didn’t score again for England and finished his career level with Charlton.

If only other players had learnt from Gary’s mistake.
