THE BLUE ARMY MAILING LIST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------
Q
- What is the Blue Army Mailing List?
A - An eGroups Internet mailing list dedicated to the discussion
of Leicester City Football Club and related topics.
Q
- Major who?
A - Major nobody!!! That was the old list which used to
be operated with majordomo software. The list is now hosted
by Yahoo Groups.
Q
- Do you have any official connection to LCFC Plc
A - Absolutely none. The list is a supporters' forum which
has been around in various forms since long before the club
created a presence on the Internet. If you are interested
in an official chat area then there is one on the official
LCFC web site, although it is a bulletin board style discussion
area rather than a mailing list.
Q
- Can anyone join the mailing list ?
A - Anyone and everyone is welcome. There is the facility
to prevent individual email accounts or domains from being
able to join and the list administrator can ban people.
However such action will only be taken where there are large
numbers of complaints from other list members and the problem
can not be solved in any other way.
Q
- How do I join?
A - Send a blank message to [email protected].
Or check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BlueArmy/
Q
- How do I get off the list?
A - Each message that you receive from the list will have
the details of how to unsubscribe at the bottom. Basically
you send a blank message to [email protected].
You can also unsubscribe via the eGroups website, but this
is a more difficult option.
Q
- I'm on the list, what now?
A - You will receive all messages posted by other list members.
New subscribers are advised to lurk for a little while to
get the feel of things. When you post your own messages
they should be sent to [email protected].
Q
- How many messages will I get?
A - Well that's a bit of an odd question!! You'll get as
many messages as other listers send (and your own back,
too). On a busy day, you can certainly expect to get at
least 50, but don't stay in on a Friday night because everybody
else will be out and you will hardly get a thing.
Q
- FIFTY?? My boss will go mad!! I'll get the sack!!!!
A - Well, in your case it may be better to take the daily
digest. All of the day's messages will be sent to you in
a single email. On days when there are a lot of messages,
Yahoo Groups will send them to you in batches of 25. Alternatively
it might be better to choose "No Mail" and read
the messages on the website.
Neither of these choices are appropriate though if you want
to be kept right up-to-date.
Q
- So if I choose Digest or No Mail, am I stuck with it?
A - No, not at all. You can swap between Normal, Digest
and No Mail as often as you choose. You can change mode
by visiting the Yahoo Groups website.
Q
- Can I send any message I like to the list ?
A - You can and you can't. The list members decide what
is suitable topic matter and will let you know if you stray
too far away from subjects of general interest to other
subscribers. If you have used particularly abusive language
the list software *may* send the message to me rather than
the list itself and I either trash it or repost it to the
list. Restrictions are currently extremely limited and will
remain so as long as common sense prevails.
Q
- Should I watch what I say?
A - The list is a public forum. Anyone can see what you
write so you should be a little careful. Please do not post
anything libelous - the recent Norwich Union case has shown
that prosecutions are made.
Q
- I've scanned in a picture of Vicky Vixen. Shall I post
it to the list?
A - You can send it to the list if you want, but it won't
get there - the Yahoo Groups software strips off all attachments,
so the rest of the list will just get your message and the
attachments will go to the big bin in the sky.
Q
- So if I've got a really good picture of Ade Akinbiyi scoring
a hat-trick for City, I can't share it with everybody else??
A - Well, that's where you're wrong!! You can upload files
to our page on the eGroups website for other listers to
download. eGroups will send everybody a message to tell
them how to find your masterpiece, but please make sure
that you include a description so that people will know
what they are getting. For details on how to upload files,
please check on the eGroups page.
Q
- So where do I find the our page on the Yahoo Groups website?
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BlueArmy/
Q
- Is there anything I really shouldn't post?
A - Please do not post text from other sources unless you
are certain there is no infringement to copyright. If a
web site, for instance, says that reproduction is not permitted
without the permission of the authors then they mean it.
Please be careful for your own sake.
Q
- Any other guidelines?
A - If you are replying to a message then quote selectively.
Do not repost huge chunks of a message from someone else
with a single line comment at the bottom. Learn how to use
the editing facility of your email software! Really this
is standard email practice we're talking about now, as is
the request to limit postings to a maximum width of 80 columns
please.
Q
- My new email program sends everything in MIME and HTML
format - is that OK ?
A - No! Please only send plain ASCII text, if for no other
reason than many people won't be able to see your comments
if you don't. Also viruses are more easily forwarded with
posts which are written in HTML - I know you haven't got
any viruses (have you??), but better safe than sorry!!
Q
- My mailbox is empty. Shall I send messages asking if the
service is down?
A - The list may just be quiet. Your own service provider
may have a fault. Or possibly the list is temporarily out
of action. Wait and see what happens! Normally faults are
fixed very quickly. If you remain unsure check with me or
another list member, not the list itself.
Q
- My messages aren't appearing on the list. Why not?
A - Check that you are posting to [email protected].
Only list subscribers can post to the list and only from
the exact address they are registered as. If you post as
[email protected] but you are subscribed as [email protected]
your message will be bounced.
Q
- Can I post test messages to the list ?
A - No. Please do not do this. There's really no point in
doing it. If you want to send a test message, you can send
it to yourself. If the list isn't working, a test message
isn't going to mend it.
Q
- Complaints, queries, additions to this FAQ... who do I
go to?
A - Post to: [email protected]
